Importing a CSV Bank Statement into Excel

A step-by-step guide on how to import your CSV bank statement into Excel

CSV is a convenient format for importing into Microsoft Excel for analysis and record-keeping. As such, many banks now let you download monthly statements as CSV files. This guide explains how to import a bank statement CSV file into an Excel spreadsheet without any additional software.

Import data from a text file (CSV) into Excel

CSV files are plain text files that use commas to separate values. Excel can open CSV files directly, but the data is not always formatted as expected. To avoid issues, follow the steps below.

  1. Click the cell where you want the imported data to appear.

  2. On the Data tab, in the Get & Transform Data group, click From Text/CSV.

  3. In the Import Data dialog box, locate and double-click the text file you want to import, then click Import.

Follow the instructions in the Text Import Wizard. You can click Help on any page of the wizard for more details. When you have completed the steps, click Finish to complete the import.

  1. After selecting the table, choose Load > Load To to specify where the data should be placed. In the Import Data dialog box:

    1. Select one of the available Import Data options.
    2. Click OK.

Excel will insert the external data into the location you selected.

If Excel does not apply the correct format to a column, you can adjust it after importing. For more information, see Convert numbers stored as text to numbers and Convert dates stored as text to dates.

What to do if your bank statement is not in CSV format

If your bank statements are not available as CSV files, or you only have access to scanned copies, you can use BankStatement.to to convert them to Excel or CSV. Upload your statement in its original format (such as PDF or JPEG), and the service will generate a CSV file that you can then import into Excel using the steps above. BankStatement.to can also convert bank statements directly into other formats, such as Excel (XLSX), if you prefer.
